What you will be doing

We are currently looking for a Senior Manager – Environmental Planning to join Umicore’s Battery Material (BM) business unit in the Engineering team in Brussels, Belgium. In this role you will lead the integration & strategic planning of all the environment impact & permit activities associated with the engineering portfolio. You will also coordinate with site Environment Manager to monitor & follow with authorities to ensure global compliance of the permitting portfolio.

You will review and plan the submission of environmental studies, including the impact assessment analysis (EIA) from early design stages to completion of projects managed by the Engineering team and in-line with Umicore’s sustainability strategies and efforts such as our Let’s Go for Zero initiative.

Responsibilities:

Environment Impact Program for Expansion Programs

  • Lead the EIA program in coordination with relevant Site Environment Manager or Project Manager from feasibility evaluation of requirements to completion
  • Lead the environmental studies, collect and organize the data required for the EIA process and manage the work of consultants according to the project schedule
  • Document the EIA process across existing sites and enable scaled readiness as part of site selection studies
  • Lead and provide strategic direction on environmental permitting and regulatory compliance efforts for BM investments and construction efforts, including Environmental Impact Assessments, and adherence to relevant international and national Directives and Legislations
  • Act as contact for local administrations, consultants and different stakeholders and amend/include any documentation that is needed to allow the start of construction and predict potential risks
  • Provide environmental risk management through the project lifecycle from initial due diligence through execution and start-up
  • Identify and evaluate environmental permitting risks and regulatory changes affecting relevant development projects
  • Gather relevant information about environmental studies done by competitors in Europe and study possible application/impact for Umicore

 

Site Environment Compliance Programs

  • Monitor the environment compliance with the environmental permit once approved. Identify and alert on the scope changes impacting the EIA and propose means for the scope changes to comply with the EIA.
  • Manage vendors & contractors on-site, analyze the potential risk and recommend actions to mitigate the problems from construction (EHS, manpower, logistics …).
  • Perform and support commissioning of the equipment before hand-over to the Process team and them during the internal qualification
  • Perform engineering and technical support to the sites when needed
  • Represent engineering at site levels in context of Environment and Energy policies with focus on a sustainable development (Let’s go for Zero strategy), including overseeing the necessary arrangements for new investments
  • Collaborate in internal and external audits
  • Share experience and knowledge with other regional teams and with global engineering about relevant issues and requirements, including coordinating with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) teams where needed

Additionally:

  • Performance Measurement and Analysis: Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) and tracking progress against Permit limits. Analyze data to assess the success of long-term strategies and make adjustments as necessary
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them; scenario planning, risk assessment, and ensuring the organization is prepared for unexpected challenges
  • Communication and Reporting: to various internal and external stakeholders, executive team and relevant departments including regular progress reports to the Advanced Planning Sr. Director

Travel: up to 30%

Who we are looking for

  • 15+ years as Environment or EHS manager or PMO , ideally with 5 years’ experience in  Automotive (APQP) or Material/Mining Industry or alternatively in a regulated industry
  • University degree or Equivalent qualification preferably Masters in Environmental Sciences/Eng. Ideally with National Certification in Environment Management
  • Technical experience and/or background in the execution of  Environment Impact Assessment as well Permit application both in the execution of industrial projects in operational environments
  • Knowledge of EHS standards, industry good practices and legal requirements applicable to Material/Mining industries, ideally with a good understanding of Eniviroment Directive such as EU’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Directive  2014/52/EU)
  • Knowledge of industrial project trades and the interactions between all trades (project management, construction management, civil/building/facilities, electrical, piping, process, equipment and start-up activities).
  • Strong working knowledge of the MS Office package
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet & dashboard applications, such as MS Power BI. MS Excel & Tableau
  • Project or Portfolio Management certification (PMI or Prince2) is a plus
  • Excellent English  (both written and spoken)
  • Ability to lead teams, projects and drive alignment with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to overcome complex challenges and find effective solutions through analyzing and critical thinking
  • Effective time management to ensure tasks are completed on schedule and priorities are managed efficiently
