Completion of the new Moretusburg-Hemiksem link road near the Umicore site in Hoboken postponed until autumn 2026

Press release

Completion of the new link road between Moretusburg and Hemiksem, which runs alongside the Umicore site in Hoboken, is now expected in autumn 2026 rather than in summer. The change in schedule is due to the delayed delivery of a sound-absorbing wall, which forms part of the permit conditions for the new road. Umicore, the City of Antwerp and the district of Hoboken have jointly agreed on a solution to normalize access for industry and residential neighborhoods in the meantime.

Because of the later commissioning of the link road, Adolf Greinerstraat will temporarily reopen as a public road. As the other road works needed to connect the new link road to the existing road have now been completed, the main route along the Scheldt can once again be opened to all traffic. This will also allow Krijgsbaan, where works are due to start shortly, to use Adolf Greinerstraat as a diversion route.

To safeguard safety and traffic flow on Adolf Greinerstraat, Umicore will restore the road using temporary measures. Subject to change, Adolf Greinerstraat will reopen to trucks, cars and cyclists from Monday 22 June.

Umicore, the city and the district will inform local residents and companies in good time when the new link road has been fully completed and is ready to be brought into use. As soon as that is the case, the current Adolf Greinerstraat will be permanently closed as a public road and incorporated into the Umicore plant site.

About the project

Umicore is developing and financing the new link road, including a separate cycle path between Moretusburg and Hemiksem, in cooperation with the City of Antwerp and the district of Hoboken. The road runs along the eastern side of the site and replaces the current Adolf Greinerstraat, a public road that crosses the Umicore plant. This will improve road safety for all road users. The multimodal rail connection will be maintained, and a buffer park has been created between the plant and the residential area.
