"I like the respectful atmosphere within the company. This is one of Umicore's values and you can just feel it."

Can you describe your role at Umicore?

As a process development engineer, I develop new processes or improve existing ones in a team. In my current assignment in the Philippines, I am working on two projects: setting up a new plant for a new process and expanding an existing plant, which will lead to an increase in production.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I work on scientific and technical challenges every day. I just love it. My learning curve is very steep because I work on a project basis. What I like most is working in a team: with technical experts in Olen, people on site who are building the plant and the operators who ultimately control the process.

What do you enjoy about working for Umicore?

I like the respectful atmosphere within the company. This is one of Umicore's values and you can just feel it.

Why did you want to join Umicore?

Sustainability is one of Umicore’s core values, which is why the company appealed to me. It is important to me - even during working hours - to be aware of the environment and to contribute to a better world with my knowledge. I want to be a wholehearted ambassador for the company I work for and at Umicore this is possible!

What do you look forward to when you leave for work in the morning?

Solving problems as a team is very nice: when all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, I get an enormous boost and that is hugely satisfying. Every day there is a small victory and we see progress somewhere as a team. These moments of joy give me energy every day.

What has been your highlight so far in your role at Umicore?

I’ve already had the opportunity to go abroad twice for Umicore: in 2020, I worked in the US for 9 months, and now I'm in the Philippines. It is my dream to build an international career, so these foreign assignments are definite highlights for me.

Advice for new joiners?

Make as many contacts as possible. That makes work easier and, above all, so much more enjoyable. There are many opportunities to meet people, across different departments, within Umicore: projects, sporting events, lunches in the dining room, etc. Take the opportunities to get to know your colleagues with both hands, you are always stronger as a team.
