Neighborhoud council
Since September 2022, Umicore together with the company Aurubis, have organized a joint neighborhood council in our sites in Olen.
With this council, both companies create an open platform for dialogue. Together with representatives from the relevant surrounding neighborhoods, we discuss what we are working on as companies and promote direct, personal and transparent communication. Topics such as infrastructure and investment projects, mobility and complaints are addressed. The ways to contact Umicore or Aurubis 24/7 via the gatehouse remain unchanged.
As a company, we give great importance to addressing reports quickly and effectively. This is why we ask our neighbors to report issues, including noise or odors, as soon as possible. This allows us to find the cause and implement a solution.

A new project: Battery system on the Aurubis and Umicore sites
Bnewable, Aurubis and Umicore are planning to develop a battery energy storage system on their industrial sites in Olen. Ahead of the public consultation, we are informing the local community about this project.
Why this project?
Aurubis and Umicore have been committed for many years to sustainable and future-oriented business operations. A battery system fits within that vision: it stores electricity when there is a surplus of wind or solar energy and releases that energy when demand is high. With a storage capacity of 180 MWh, this project represents the equivalent of the daily electricity needs of around 25,000 households. In this way, Aurubis and Umicore, together with Bnewable, are contributing to a more sustainable and stable Belgian electricity grid.
