On Friday 1 November around 4.30 pm, a fire started at an installation at our site in Hoboken. Internal and external emergency services arrived at the scene and quickly got the situation under control. No one was injured.
Due to the smoke development, the fire brigade recommended that windows and doors be kept closed in the vicinity of the site and that ventilation in homes and vehicles be switched off. The Adolf Greinerstraat was also closed for a while as a result.
Mobile measurement teams from the Zone Rand Fire Department carried out measurements for acutely harmful substances at various locations in the area. These were all negative. We urgently analysed the particulate filters (PM10) at our own measuring points around our site on both the day of the incident and the day after. The results show that the measured concentrations of metals lead, arsenic and cadmium in particulate matter are not elevated on these days, but are close to or even lower than the normal monthly and annual averages. The Flemish Environment Agency has also accelerated the removal of its particulate matter filters, but the results are not yet known.
We are pleased that our environmental measures are working and the quick and efficient action of the internal and external emergency services has ensured that the impact of the incident on the environment has been limited.
