Inspiring the next generation through STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

How can we get young people enthusiastic about science and technology? How can we help them embrace and develop their STEM skills? We believe the answer lies in making science, technology, engineering and mathematics accessible, inspiring and relevant for everyone, everywhere. This is why we support a wide range of initiatives that engage young people around the world.

Why is STEM important?

STEM is at the heart of solving the world’s most urgent challenges, whether it is climate change, digital transformation or the shift to a global circular economy. These fields require creative, technical and scientific minds. It goes beyond engineering and also includes operators, technicians, IT specialists, laboratory analysts and researchers.

STEM education opens the door to a wide range of careers, many of which are in high demand across all industries. We see STEM not only as a pathway to innovation, but also as a foundation for building a more sustainable future.

Our commitment

We are committed to helping young people discover their STEM potential and prepare for meaningful, future-oriented careers. We bring our passion for technology and innovation and our broader social responsibility together through partnerships. We collaborate with schools, governments and other companies to maximize our impact and reach as many young learners as possible.

Working together towards a sustainable future is not just a slogan; it is a goal we pursue every day. And for that, we need colleagues who feel at home in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

From inspiration to action

By working closely with organizations in the communities where we operate, we inspire children and young people by showing them that science is cool, fun and part of everyday life. Through experiments and challenges, we help children aged 10 to 14 discover science and technology in an engaging way.

With initiatives like company visits, we help young people experience STEM careers up close and hands-on. In video interviews, young reporters speak with professionals who use their STEM education to make a difference, like Umicore colleagues who recycle germanium for use in electronics.

We also bring STEM to life through mentoring, immersive activities and playful experiments. We work with schools in different regions across the communities where we operate to develop educational programs, often combining biology, chemistry and physics with applied research and themes like sustainability and recycling.

Giving back to people and the planet

Umicore is committed to improving the well-being of the communities in which we operate. We support initiatives focused on community development and environmental stewardship by providing financial support, in-kind resources and the expertise of our teams. Our contributions go beyond philanthropy and aim to create lasting change through education, healthcare and social well-being. We create opportunities for people to grow and thrive. One of our key focus areas in terms of donations is supporting and funding educational initiatives that enable all children to access education and develop skills that will benefit them in the future.
