Umicore operates all installations in line with local regulations and environmental permits. We are in line with emission standards and  we  keep improving our processes to further minimize our environmental impact.

Limiting diffuse emissions

Our Olen site mainly uses wet (hydrometallurgical) processes, which naturally reduce the spread of diffuse emissions. All activities take place indoors, in buildings equipped with proper ventilation and air‑treatment systems.

Preventing dust dispersion

Enclosed processes
We further reduce potential dust dispersion by enclosing logistics and production processes. Areas where dust may be generated are kept contained within the production flow wherever possible.

Example: Nickel speiss processing
We invested in a modern installation to process nickel speiss—an alloy containing cobalt, nickel and arsenic. Because the materials are processed while moist, far less dust is formed. The enclosed zones are fitted with extraction systems to keep emissions low.

Reducing point source emissions

Across our site, about 100 stacks are connected to our installations. To limit emissions, we use purification systems that capture and treat exhaust gases.

  • Scrubbers: Spray systems that purify gases
  • Dust filters: capture dust particles so as few as possible escape

Depending on the process, these systems operate together or separately. We use the best available technologies and check their performance through regular measurements that go beyond regulatory requirements.
