What you will be doing

Purpose of the role
In the recycling of precious metals, slag is formed as a useful by-product and has several applications in the construction industry. In order to guarantee the sustainable output of these slags in the future, a new process using an electric furnace will be implemented in Hoboken! Umicore is looking for a motivated project manager to lead this important investment project from engineering phase to the operational mode. You take the full lead of the innovative Electric furnace investment project, including focus on process, technological and operational aspects during the project execution, and warrant the successful execution of the project in line with the expectations of the partners! The project will be executed in phases spread over the coming years. You report to the Head of strategic projects and new operations.


Your responsibilities:

  • You own the project according to the project management procedures of Umicore:
    • In general you realize the project within the agreed planning and budget
    • You assure alignment of the process and technological development and that the technical performances are met
    • You set up an operational structure for the new plant and assure the knowledge transfer into the operational organization
    • You assure a safe construction of the plant taking into account all legal requirements
    • You develop the business case and take ownership for the realization thereof
  • You empower and supervise the project team, assure consensus as well as the good functioning of the team
  • You define and follow up the progress of all the work packages required for the execution of the project
  • You assure control and follow-up of all aspects of the project by regular meetings and reporting. You detect timely roadblocks and take corrective action to overcome them
  • You report progress of the project to the project owner. Take ad hoc initiatives when strategic or arbitration decisions are required (e.g. risk management, change of scope, business case and end of phase reporting)
  • You assure transparent communication during the course of the project and warrant the knowledge management of the lessons learned
  • You contribute to the mission of Umicore by securing and growing our unique expertise (in a.o. process development, technological development, operational excellence and project management skills)

Who we are looking for

  • You have a Master degree in engineering or in applied science, with at least 5 years of operational or project management experience in a technological process or research environment
  • You are fluent in Dutch and English, solid understanding of French and German is a plus
  • You have excellent project & engineering leadership skills
  • Knowledge and experience with pyrometallurgical processes is a plus
  • You are familiar with the principles of Financial Management
  • You show confidence in a leading role, focusing on empowerment and growth of the team members and encouraging to values, people and results
  • You are a problem solver and committed to results
  • You are an effective communicator, open, respectful and convincing
  • Planning and organizing is your strength
  • You are a great teammate, creative and assertive
