What you will be doing

RBM business is expected to grow significantly next 3 to 5 years in Finland, Poland and Canada. Environmental impact studies are on-going for new and expansion projects covering metal refining, leaching and production of precursors to Cathode Active Materials (pCAM)  In this development, ensuring a minimal impact on the environment (water emissions, air emissions) is always important and new standards under development can have a significant impact!
Umicore has an ambitious Let’s go for Zero program, including bold targets for air and water emissions!

As RBM Environment manager you will be responsible for setting global environment standards for RBM operations, based on discussions with governments in the different countries, following up environmental legislation trends and development of documentation (dispersion models, ecotox studies, literature studies, etc.) to support RBM’s position. Furthermore, you will be instrumental in connecting environmental impact data from development cycles (DQP) of products and processes with the sites where applicable.
 

Your detailed responsibilities:

• Support the negotiations with governmental agencies in case of new expansion projects
• Define scope and follow up external studies (ecotoxicity studies, dispersion modelling, etc.) with consultants, universities to develop material to support Umicore’s position in discussion with the governments
• Set RBM minimum environment standards for sites and new projects
• Check environmental impacts of new products and new/improvement of processes during the development of new products and processes (DQP). Hence follow up gate reviews of various DQP programs (RTC, PTC, PDE, PTR, …) and align any relevant environmental aspects with the relevant sites
• Develop an RBM water stewardship strategy aligned with the corporate strategy (specifically water stewardship),
• Follow legislative trends in the key regions and countries where RBM is active and rapidly growing
• Define and handle environmental critical metrics, collect and process environmental data, ensure quality of data, analyse trends and compare with group objectives, ensure clear communication of results for annual report as well as internal BU reporting
• Support the EIA and permitting procedures where needed

You will be located in Brussels headquarter and travel regularly to different sites.

Who we are looking for

• You have obtained a Master’s degree in Environmental Management/-Engineering/-Chemistry/-Technology and you have confirmed experience (+10 years) in environmental management in manufacturing plant, environmental risk assessment, environmental consulting or similar work areas
• Experience with EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment), environmental permitting process is a must
• You have good knowledge about dispersion modelling, eco-toxicity study, air pollution mitigation, wastewater treatment process
• Sound knowledge of environmental risk assessment principles and techniques
• Familiarity with environmental legislation in Europe and Canada
• Capability to quickly analyse data and information and evaluate these in multi-stakeholder situations
• Networking skills across multiple countries
• Experience in research and/or professional connections to academic/research institutions and industry associations in the subject area is an added value
• Experience in working in an intercultural environment especially in approaches to environmental and H&S issues by local authorities and sites
• Excellent written and spoken English communication
